A buffer is an aqueous solution, consisting of a weak acid and a conjugate base, or a weak base and a conjugate acid. When a certain strong acid or base is added the pH value of a substance does not shift, meaning that buffer solutions can be used to maintain the pH at an almost constant value. This is a buffer’s primary purpose, but it is capable of far more.

Buffers can also be used to provide essential cofactors for enzymatically driven reactions, critical salts and essential nutrients for cells and tissue. Due to all these benefits, the primary function is often ignored. If a plant’s pH value were to differ too much from its original pH value, the plant’s ability to grow would be affected.

To maintain optimal growing conditions in PTC, buffers are added to media to keep the pH at an almost constant level.

At Lab Associates we can provide you with a number of different buffers, such as:

  • Boric acid
  • Citric acid
  • EDDHA
  • EDTA
  • Tris
