Peptones are natural sources of amino acids, proteins and peptides in growth media. Peptones are produced by acid hydrolysis of natural products, such as milk, plants, animal tissue, or enzymatic digestion. The amount of peptones available are extremely large, but most of these peptones cannot be used due to safety reasons. They are commonly used in microbiology as a source to stimulate growth.

We differ in 3 types of peptones:

  • Peptone
  • Tryptone
  • Yeast extract

Peptones are natural sources of amino acids, proteins and peptides. Peptones are used in media to grow orchids for example.

Peptones are commonly used in media to stimulate growth. For example to grow flowers, like this Floricone Phalaenopsis.
